Portisheads first album, Dummy (RIAA Gold), was a pioneering document of a new music emerging from the U.K. based on sampling and hip-hop beats. They were copied so much after the first LP they felt they had to make a different statement with the follow-up, Portishead.
So live instrumentation joined the sampling in a bigger way and consequently made the Portishead gigs even more exciting than before. To mark this change, Portishead launched the second album with a live show at Roseland in NYC on July 24, 1997.
This wasnt just any live show - this would be the first (and probably only) time the band would play with a full orchestra and conductor. It was a magical night and was recorded on film and audio.
PNYC is an album of live tracks mostly recorded at the Roseland show. A video of the Roseland show with added documentary footage and a short film called Road Trip in-stores the same day as the audio recording.
This album was carefully compiled by the band members from hundreds of hours of live recordings.
