To mark 50 years of independence for India from Great Britain, Acid Jazz is releasing a compilation entitled Swaraj. (Swa = the self and Raj = to rule) is an atmospheric blend of Eastern and Western musical suggestions that together create a totally new sound. Free spirited in its conception, this album spans underground breakbeats, rap and groove, mainstream and classical sounds rooted in India's diverse culture. Tracks from Fun-Da-Men-Tal deal with women in India and their cultural heritage. India's signature instrument, the sitar, can be found on tracks from Ravi Harris. More traditional moments come from the Urdu love "ghazal" by Parvez. More contemporary sounds come from the hip-hop meets Punjabi bhangra moments of Apache Indian and drum and bass of Mo Magic. Swaraj comes together in a unique celebration of history and musical styles which should be savored and enjoyed.
