Ernest Ranglin:
Memories of Barber Mack
(Island Jamaica Jazz) 314-524 339-2/4
Ernest Ranglin is one of Jamaica's finest guitarists and the inventor of the Jamaican Ska guitar sound. (In fact, Ranglin was the first artists to record on Island Records.) His forthcoming album, "Memories Of Barber Mack" is a reflection of his vast talent and experience in playing both Jazz and Reggae for five decades.
"Memories Of Barber Mack" is the follow up to his critically acclaimed album "Below the Bassline " which along with pianist Monty Alexander's album "Yard Movement," launched the Island Jamaica Jazz record label last year. The impact of "Below The Bassline" was so great that the Halifax building society chose the track "Surfin" from the alubum as the soundtrack to their television advertising campaign.
The new album is dedicated tothe mento sax player Barber Mack and consists of ten self-penned compositions along with two interpretations of Jamaican classics; Junior Byles' "Fade Away" and Derrick Harriot's "Stop That Train". One sentimental track, "For Juni" is a tribute to his wife about whom he says, "She is my sister, my mother, and also my best friend."
"Memories Of Barber Mack" is produced by Ranglin himself and accompanying his supreme guitar playing are musicians Sly Dunbar on drums, Jon Williams on piano, David Williams on acoustic bass and percussionist Larry McDonald. The album was recorded in Jamaica and New York.
